Thank You!

I recently received this thank you note from CareFirst (formerly Southern Tier Hospice and Palliative Care).  It is a bittersweet reminder of why we make quilts and then donate them to those in need.

Mountain Laurel Quilt Guild,

     Thank you so much for the recent donation of blankets/quilts.  The blankets geared for men are very much needed and very treasured by those who are fortunate enough to get one.  I have to share that the amazing blanket that had the fishing decoration on it was placed in the arms of a grieving mother whose 18 year old son had recently died in her arms.  The blanket serves as a tender reminder of her son while providing a substitute for his warm embrace.
Respectfully,
Andrea Barber

As you can see, there is still a need for quilts and blankets for men!  If you are looking for a way to use up those John Deere or camouflage fabric scraps that are taking up precious stash space, why not consider making a "manly" quilt or blanket to donate to CareFirst?

Contact Susan Mc, outreach chair, with any questions or for more details.

Guild Picnic Tomorrow

Just a reminder that MLQG's annual picnic for members and family is scheduled for 6:00 PM tomorrow, Monday, August 19th at the Lakeside Pavilion at Ives Run Recreation Center (off of Route 287, just south of Tioga). Please bring a dish to share, place settings for your family, tablecloth, and show and tell. Bottled water and trash bags will be provided.

And a few more things --

-- there will be a board meeting before the picnic, starting at 5:00 PM. All current and new chairs should try to attend, and all guild members are welcome as well;

-- the 13 members who signed up to exchange Artist Trading Cards should bring their finished cards to the picnic.

Hope to see you all there -- the weather forecast looks great!

Open Sewing at the Lake House -- Wednesday August 14th

MLQG members gather for open sewing sessions at the lake house (near Hills Creek Lake) on Wednesdays from 10:00 until 3:00. All guild members of all ability levels and interests are welcome to attend on any Wednesday and may work on any stitching projects that they like, hand or machine, even knitting/crocheting/embroidery. The only exception is the fourth Wednesday, which will continue to be a charity sewing day.

Once in a while, there may be discussion topics on some Wednesdays (modern quilting, applique, etc), but those attending are not obligated to work on quilts that are related to the topic. The purpose of these get-togethers is to spend time with other fiber fanatics and to learn from each other, no matter what we're all working on. Bring your projects, machine, and lunch. Stay for an hour or stay all day.

The next open sewing session will be on Wednesday, August 14th. If you need directions to the lake house or want more info, please contact Anya T., Dori S., or Susan McC. (check your roster for contact info or comment on this blog post).

Thank you to guild member Moddy M. and family for allowing us to use the lake house!
