Open Sewing at the Lake House -- Wednesday, January 1st
Did you know that what you do on New Year's Day is what you'll do all year long? That means it's a perfect time to come out to the lake house and spend some fun quilting time with fellow MLQG members!
Lake House Open Sewing -- MLQG members gather for open sewing sessions at the lake house (near Hills Creek Lake) on Wednesdays from 10:00 until ?. All guild members of all ability levels and interests are welcome to attend on any Wednesday and may work on any stitching projects that they like, hand or machine, even knitting/crocheting/ embroidery. The only exception is the fourth Wednesday of the month, which will continue to be a charity sewing day.
The purpose of these get-togethers is to spend time with other fiber fanatics and to learn from each other, no matter what we're all working on. Bring your projects, machine, and lunch. Stay for an hour or stay all day. Just be warned that if only a couple of people show up in the morning, we may close up shop by noon (but that doesn't happen too often). And of course, if the weather is iffy, please don't put yourself in danger on the roads.
The next open sewing session at the lake house will be on Wednesday, January 1st. If you need directions to the lake house or want more info, please contact Anya T., Dori S., or Susan McC. (check your roster for contact info or comment on this blog post).
*Please be aware that Sunday's snow and slush did not get cleared at the lake house before it froze, so the driveway and sidewalks are quite slippery. It would probably be advisable to park along the road and walk to the house cautiously through the grass.

Shown in the photo are 19 quilts and fleece blankets that were delivered to CONCERN last week. That brings our total of quilts/blankets donated to foster kids to
70 since we started this project last January! This is an ongoing guild project as children,
unfortunately, are always going into foster care, so please continue to support
the kids with your quilts and blankets. More information about quilts for

Modern Quilts?
Need a fun project to keep your mind off the cold weather? This winter all guild members are challenged to step out of their comfort
zone and try something new by making a modern quilt for a special
modern quilt show-and-tell as part of the March 2014 meeting. Need a little added incentive? Everyone who brings a modern quilt to the March meeting will be entered in a drawing for a special prize.
What exactly is a modern quilt? Modern quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design. Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt. These include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. "Modern traditionalism" or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting.
Would you like to see some beautiful examples of modern quilts? Visit the Modern Quilting Gallery at www.themodernquiltguild.com/portfolio
So what are you waiting for? Get excited, get creative and get sewing. Challenge yourself and go make something great! Contact Anya T. or Susan Mc. with any questions or for more information.

Placemats for Meals on Wheels
We are off to a great start toward meeting
the placemat goal for Meals on Wheels! We still need about 50 placemats
before the December 16th deadline though, so keep stitching! It only takes
a few minutes to make a placemat and they are great for free motion
quilting practice!
Full details about this project can be found HERE or you can contact Susan M., Outreach Chairperson, for more information.

Needles Quilt Shop - Sale & Change In Hours
Yup, it's that time of the year...time to think about those Christmas presents
for all your quilting family and friends! When I was talking about Black Friday
with friends they suggested a Gray Wednesday also. Soooo, why not? On
Wednesday 11/27/13 and Friday 11/29/13 everything (excluding sales items) will
be 20% off.
A great stocking stuffer item is the new Galaxy Electric Seam Ripper. Makes having to rip out a whole lot faster and easier (not that any of us make mistakes). It's my new favorite gadget.
Not sure what to get somebody. Bali Bundles and Bali Boxes would make a nice gift. Bali Bundles are 9 fat quarters in coordinating colors. These along with the book Fat Quarter Bags would brighten any ones day (it only takes 6 FQ to make a purse). Bali boxes are 5 half yard cuts in a batik covered box in coordinating colors.
We still have Christmas material if you're looking for a holiday project. A table runner or place mats make a great last minute gift.
Dickens is also coming up on December 7th and will be another fun filled day. Make sure to stop in and warm up.
As always I can't wait to see you and help with any of your needs!
Tracy

Please note that until further notice Needles Quilt Shop will no longer be open late on the evenings of the guild meeting. Regular store hours continue to be Mon.-Sat. 10 a.m. to 5 p m.

2014 Challenge Quilt Theme/Requirements
2014 Challenge Quilt Theme/Requirements
"Elements"
Earth, wind, fire and water are the building blocks of this year’s challenge! Make a quilt representing one, all, or any combination of the four elements. All members are encouraged to participate, no matter what their quilting experience. Use your imagination and try something new, whether you use a traditional pattern or design your own elemental quilt.
Quilts must have three layers, be either machine or hand quilted, and have a binding.
Entries must be less than 36" at widest/longest point. This includes embellishments that may be hanging off the edge of the quilt.
Quilts should have a hanging sleeve or another appropriate method for display.
Entries must have a label with the name of the maker and title of the quilt sewn securely to the back of the quilt.
Don’t forget the most important element of all...FUN! Enjoy the process of creating your entry!
The above information can also be found on the guild's webpage under the "Exhibit" tab for future reference.

Open Sewing at the Lake House and Happy Hour Sewing in Corning -- Wednesday, November 6th
The only exception is the fourth Wednesday of the month, which will continue to be a charity sewing day (charity sewing is on hiatus until January 2014).
The next open sewing session at the lake house will be on Wednesday, November 6th. If you need directions to the lake house or want more info, please contact Anya T., Dori S., or Susan McC. (check your roster for contact info or comment on this blog post).
And if you can't come during the day to the lake house, consider going to Happy Hour Sewing in Corning --
Corning Open Sewing -- Bring whatever you’d like to work on – cutting, sewing, embroidery, cross stitch or your knitting! An iron & ironing board are available at the church hall. We like food if you want to bring some or we can order out. Time is from 5:15 – 8:45 pm at the Emanuel Lutheran Church, West William St. Corning, NY. Contact Carrie S. (check your roster for contact info) for more details. The next date for Happy Hour Sewing is Wednesday, November 6th.
The Corning open sewing group has decided to work on some charity projects on the first Wednesday of even-numbered months (working on charity projects is not obligatory that day, just suggested). The upcoming date for happy hour charity sewing is Dec 4th. A couple of ideas for charity projects include little girl dresses for Africa (the church will be sending a shipment in Dec), and/or placemats for Meals on Wheels (any style/any pattern, to be delivered with holiday meals in Dec).

Machine Quilting Workshop -- Oct 12th
We hope everyone who attended the workshop now has more confidence and a few new techniques to try some machine quilting at home. "Homework" is to use the placemat kit given out at the workshop to try your newly-acquired skills and make a placemat for the guild's outreach program, Meals on Wheels.
Thank you to instructor Cyndi Slothower of Quilters Corner in Ithaca, NY.

Important News About Charity Quilting at the Lake House
Charity Quilting, which is normally held at the lake house on the 4th Wednesday of each month, is going to be on hold for the next few months. Because of a scheduling conflict in October, Thanksgiving in November, and Christmas in December, we thought it best to put Charity Quilting on hiatus rather than trying to reschedule so many dates. Use this break to enjoy time in your own sewing room, but please continue to support the guild's current outreach projects too! See you all again for Charity Quilting at the lake house on January 22!

Free Placemat Patterns!
Apparently guild members are excited about making placemats for Meals on Wheels, because several members have sent me links to free placemat patterns and tutorials that will work beautifully for this outreach project.
This is a stitch and flip/quilt as you go tutorial for a table runner, but the size could easily be adjusted for a placemat...

Placemats for Meals on Wheels
Let's help brighten up the holidays for the shut-ins who receive Meals on Wheels by making winter and Christmas themed placemats to be delivered with their Christmas dinner. Making placemats is a great way to use up scraps and they are the perfect size for practicing free motion quilting skills too! (If you aren't sure about free motion quilting check out the workshop that is coming up on October 12th.) This is a win win project for everyone. There will even be an extra win after all the placemats have been collected, so make sure you enter your name in the drawing for each placemat you donate.
Placemats should be made with holiday or winter theme fabrics and be standard placemat size (14" x 18" give or take an inch) with a single layer of batting inside.

Thank You!
I recently received this thank you note from CareFirst (formerly Southern Tier Hospice and Palliative Care). It is a bittersweet reminder of why we make quilts and then donate them to those in need.
Mountain Laurel Quilt Guild,
Thank you so much for the recent donation of blankets/quilts. The blankets geared for men are very much needed and very treasured by those who are fortunate enough to get one. I have to share that the amazing blanket that had the fishing decoration on it was placed in the arms of a grieving mother whose 18 year old son had recently died in her arms. The blanket serves as a tender reminder of her son while providing a substitute for his warm embrace.
Respectfully,
Andrea Barber
As you can see, there is still a need for quilts and blankets for men! If you are looking for a way to use up those John Deere or camouflage fabric scraps that are taking up precious stash space, why not consider making a "manly" quilt or blanket to donate to CareFirst?
Contact Susan Mc, outreach chair, with any questions or for more details.

Stitching on the Green -- July 25th
Now that we're really into summer, fresh produce, yummy baked goods, local meat, etc. are all available at the Wellsboro Growers' Market so we're meeting for "Stitching on the Green" this Thursday. The weather forecast looks good, too!
MLQG members are welcome to join fellow guild members on Thursdays (during good weather, of course) during the summer for an afternoon of stitching on the Green in Wellsboro. Bring your hand projects of any kind (quilting, knitting, embroidery, etc) and a chair...and your lunch, if you like. We start at about noon and then head down to the Growers' Market on the lawn of the First Presbyterian Church when it opens at 3:00. Come and leave any time you like. Look for fellow guild members on the part of the Green that faces the courthouse. All MLQG members of all ability levels welcome. Bring a friend!
Note that the "Stitching on the Green" sessions are weather dependent, so if there's rain, we probably won't be there.

The program this month was entitled "Modern Quilting", presented by Jeannette Kitlan. Full of info and inspiration.
Unfortunately, low lighting in the gallery made for very grainy and blurry photos. Click on photos to enlarge.

An Evening of Inspiration (and PRIZES)!
If you missed the guild meeting last night, you missed a wonderful evening full of inspiration and PRIZES!
Jeannette Kitlan, owner of Endless Mountains Quiltworks in Tunkhannock, PA, presented a program on modern quilting and brought all sorts of goodies to give away. The table in the photo was empty by the time Jeannette was done with her program -- many lucky MLQG members went home with books, patterns, fabric, thread, magazines. And everyone went home with ideas about their next (or first) modern quilt.
Thank you, Jeannette, for your time and generosity.
Guild members are encouraged to visit Endless Mountains Quiltworks on their next quilters' field trip -- the shop is full of quilters' eye candy and definitely worth the trip. And be sure to say "thank you" to Jeannette in person.
More photos from the evening's program will be posted soon...

Doing Good Stitches
Phyllis B., a MLQG member and resident of the Shared Home in Wellsboro, recently coordinated a project with some of her fellow residents to make a couple of fun puff quilts for the guild's current outreach project, quilts for CONCERN, the local foster child program. Last week, Phyllis and the other quilters presented the completed quilts to Susan McC., the guild's outreach chairperson. While there, Susan spoke about the project to the Shared Home residents and staff, as well as to a reporter from the local paper. Look for an article in the Wellsboro Gazette soon!
Nice job, ladies, and thank you for your contribution. Keep quilting!

Modern Quilt Group
The modern quilt group will meet on
Monday, July 8 at 10:00 AM at the lake house. The topic of discussion for this meeting is, "What makes a fabric modern?" Bring a few fabric samples from your stash (either fabric that was labeled as modern or fabric that is in question of being modern) and together we will try and figure out an answer to the question. Bring a bag lunch and stay for the afternoon sew time to work on your guild trading cards or your latest modern quilt!
All guild members who are interested in modern quilts are invited to attend.
If you need directions to the lake house or have questions, contact Susan Mc. (contact info can be found on the guild roster or newsletters), or just leave a comment on this blog post.
