Twas the Night Before Christmas or A Procrastinator’s Lament

‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the land

Quilters were panicked, needles in hand.

The cookies were baked, the pies were too

But there was much quilting yet to do.

The children were sleeping, the projects mostly done.

I was getting ready to finish the last-minute one.

Away to the sewing room I flew like a flash,

Tore open the cabinet, and went through my stash.

The moon through the window, looked sadly at me

And I heard him whisper, “You won’t finish, you’ll see”

When what to my wondering eyes should appear,

A kit I had forgotten; purchased last year.

A snowman wall hanging, all done up in blue

It was meant to be given to my dear Aunt Sue.

More rapid than a Janome on the speed of quite fast,

The snowman was appearing out of fabric at last.

I drew comfort from knowing I was not alone,

My fellow procrastinators: we all should have known.

Each year it surprises us, we think we have time,

But the UFO’s are still waiting, all in a line.

Some projects are simple, just finish a quillow,

Others not started, like a case for a pillow

One friend with a log cabin top of bright red

Alas, it will be next year before it finds a bed.

Another with tea towels appliqued with a bell,

They should have fringe too, but I’ll never tell.

No hope for those like me and others who tarry,

Next year at this time, we all know nothing will vary.

We’ll say to ourselves, “I’ll finish this soon,

Oh! How I wish I had started in June”

Now! Gammill, Now! Janome, Now! Juki and Pfaff,

When we finally catch up, Oh! How we’ll laugh.

So complete on time all those who prepare,

The rest of us will eventually get there.

And then in a twinkling, I heard a bell chime.

Oh dear! Oh mercy! Do I have enough time?

I caught a glimpse of that moon; on his face was a smirk.

But I threaded my needle and turned back to my work,

The morn was still dark as I finished the chore.

That silly old moon failed his prediction once more,

Quilters are special; their love knows no bounds,

Each one has their heart in work that astounds.

When you get a gift from a quilter, no matter it’s late

It might not be perfect with every seam straight.

But it comes with promise of love pure and simple,

Use it, abuse it, and don’t worry it’ll wrinkle. 

‘Cause I know the secret, and I’ll share it with you,

You can share it with others, for I tell you true.

It comes to us clear, as it does every year

The joy of our Christmas is in holding dear.

Our friends and our loved ones, those far and those near

And those ones in heaven, tho’ that brings a tear.

So Happy Christmas to all, next year I’ll to do better,

I’ll forget the last minute project and just buy a sweater.

December Holiday Dinner - December 11, 2017, 6 pm
Bring a dish to share(not too big), your dinner place setting(plate, silverware, napkin), and something from the list below for our Tioga County Homeless Initiative gift exchange. See you there!

Christmas Party Gift Exchange
Our long-standing holiday tradition is to exchange gifts at our Christmas dinner meeting. We’ve traded fat quarters several different ways, some quite raucous! We’ve shared handmade decorations and sewing notions. At its recent meeting, the guild’s Board decided to try giving to others instead of to one another. We have many worthwhile charities in our communities which provide help to residents in need. The Board selected the Tioga County Homeless Initiative to be our gift recipient for 2017.
The Homeless Initiative operates a shelter in Whitneyville which can house up to sixteen individuals for periods up to 30 days. Dinners for the group are provided by a coalition of 13 local churches. Residents are away from the shelter during the day, in training, looking for work and for more permanent housing. Abby Thorborg, program director, spoke to the guild at the September meeting. She said that toiletries and laundry detergent are particular and on-going needs, and that towels are in short supply.
Funding for the Homeless Initiative is challenging. That’s where we can help. The $10 we each spend for a gift to a guild member will buy some much needed supplies for the shelter. Look through the list below and pick an item or two to bring to our holiday dinner. Of course, money is welcome, too. It helps pay for utilities, their small mortgage, and simple upkeep on the shelter house. Checks can be made out to Tioga County Homeless Initiative, and are tax-deductible
Toiletries: deodorant, razors, toothpaste, lotion, feminine products
Cleaning supplies: laundry detergent, bleach, toilet cleaner, sub cleaner, dish
soap, kitchen trash bags, big garbage bags, cleaning liquids, cleaning wipes
Paper products: plates, cups, napkins toilet paper, paper towels
Office supplies: paper, tablets, tape, pens, binders, file folders
Misc. Items: coffee, sugar, creamer, iced tea mix, drink mix (Kool aid type)

Tea bags are needed for Africa's Original T-Bag Designs. Bring your used tea bags to the December 11th Christmas dinner. Deb Smith will also be collecting throughout the month. Contact her if you are unable to attend the dinner.

Moda Bake Shop Lecture and Trunk Show by Karen Miller(90-120 minutes) The Moda Bake Shop gave me a jump start in the industry and I continue to design and publish for them once or twice a year. This fun and informative session shares the “whats” and “hows” of the free Moda Bake Shop “recipes” published several times a week. There’s a quick review of the wide variety of Moda Pre-Cuts and how to best use them in your upcoming quilting projects. We also look back at the top recipes from the last few years and briefly discuss how YOU TOO can become a Moda Bake Shop “Chef”. I share 25-30 quilts and projects including all of the Redbird Quilt Co Bake Shop pattern samples. Wool applique, needle turn applique, and a generous amount of Free Motion Quilting inspiration. Who doesn’t LOVE to look at Quilts? -- especially when many of the designs are Free on the Moda Bake Shop

Publicity/Outreach for the 2018 Quilt Guild Exhibit

This small quilt will hang in the 2018 exhibit, explaining the Outreach project.

Designed and created by Kate Means

We are doing something a little different for this exhibit. It seemed a perfect match. Deb Dom, publicity chair, is asking that guild members create small quilts, with a circumference of 50 inches, or 11" x 14", with a sleeve and thin dowel, so it can be hung. These will be displayed in area businesses, with a card attached advertising our guild exhibit. The deadline for getting these to Deb is June 1, 2018. The quilts will then be made available for a nominal contribution of $35, at the Gmeiner Art and Culture Center. The proceeds from these contributions will be given to Seeds of Hope Partners, a local agency working with families that could lose their children due to financial hardship.
This is a way that guild members can help make our exhibit very special. For more information, contact Deb Dom or Kate Means.

The nominating committee has been working to fill the open offices and chairs for the upcoming 2018-2019 term. We thank those who have come forward to volunteer for offices and chairs! As of today, we have just two open positions...

MEMBERSHIP CHAIR
a. Shall keep a current roll of the membership with names, addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses and keep the newsletter editor informed of changes.
b. Shall collect dues and distribute membership cards.
c. Shall record member attendance at meetings.
d. Shall publish a yearly roster.

* Membership Chair should be filled by a member ("new or old") who attends meetings regularly. Computer skills and some basic knowledge of Excel are helpful with this position.

HISTORIAN
Shall maintain an archive of digital photographs and scanned articles of importance to the guild.

Finding your “Quilting” Footprint

If you walk in the footprints of others, you will not make any of your own...and you need to! Our quilts are our “footprints” and the best way to tell people we were here! This lecture explores my design philosophy in order to inspire your quilting imagination, your quilting horizons, and your quilting footprint.

Today quilting is coveted internationally, but it has always occurred here at home in the U.S. We have an extremely rich history as foundation to our work today. Have you found your step, your signature, your voice in this broad 21st Century of quilt making? Betty Neff will be showing her patterned quilts as well as others. If you have a project (completed or in progress) based on one of Betty’s patterns or workshops, please bring to show during the lecture. Cameras are encouraged! After the lecture Betty’s patterns will be available at a discount to the guild.
