Raffle Quilt Work Bee -- Monday, September 23rd

MLQG members are invited to help with the next stage of the guild's 2020 raffle quilt. We will meet at the Gmeiner studio on Monday, September 23rd, starting at 10:00 AM and working until early afternoon. We will be working on tacking down dimensional flowers on the applique portion of the quilt, and perhaps sewing on the borders to complete the quilt top.

Please bring hand-sewing tools, and pink thread if you have some.

MLQG 2020 Exhibit Challenge Info

MLQG's raffle quilt for 2020 is made of strings and strips of all sorts of fabric. Many members have worked together to created real beauty out of scraps!  The raffle quilt will be revealed soon, but in the meantime...

Now it’s your turn. Our Challenge Category for the 2020 Exhibit is "2020 Strings and Things". The challenge is to create a quilt 20 inches by 20 inches made entirely of strips of cloth that are 2 inches or less in width when cut.  They may be long and narrow strings or short and narrow strings. You might sew several similar color strips together to cut a larger piece. You might do something totally improvisational (There’s a workshop coming in October on improvisational quilting.) You could adapt a traditional pattern.

Let your imagination run. Go find some fun strings in your stash! It’s a challenge! Let’s have a bumper crop of challenge quilts for our 2020 exhibit!

MLQG Workshop -- Improvisational Quilting -- Saturday, October 19th

Improvisational quilting means creating design without using a pattern. It’s playing with color, line, balance, and shape. It’s playing with fabric, without rules!

You’ve probably heard of the Gee’s Bend Quilts made by African-American women who lived in a very isolated community, with little outside influence on their quilting. They worked with whatever fabric they had, in big, bold designs. They were being practical, but the art world calls it art.

You can do it, too. In this class, Peggi Y. will teach you how to make some of the ‘bits’ that will inspire your design. You’ll work with mostly solid colors, and learn about how to transform a traditional block into something your own. We’ll be daring and make some cuts without a ruler and without measuring! You be able to finish a small quilt top in our time together. Then you can quilt it at home, and have it done to show at the guild's next meeting.

This class will be on October 19, 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM, at the Wellsboro Community Center on Queen Street. The cost is $22 ($16 for the workshop and $6 for supplies). Checks should be made out to MLQG and sent to MLQG Workshop Chair Ann K. Ann's contact info can be found on the guild's roster and in every issue of the guild's newsletter.

Just a Reminder About This Month's Open Sewing

Note that September's open sewing is on the SECOND Monday.

Next Open Sewing Session
 Monday, September 9th at the Gmeiner 10:00 - 2:00

All MLQG members of all ability levels and interests are welcome to attend the open sewing sessions at the Gmeiner Art and Cultural Center (where the monthly guild meetings are held) on the first Monday of each month, 10:00 - 2:00, to work on any stitching projects, hand or machine, even knitting, crocheting, or embroidery.

The purpose of these get-togethers is to spend time with other MLQG fiber fanatics and to learn from each other, no matter what we're all working on. Bring your projects, machine, and lunch. Stay for an hour or stay all day. Just be warned that if only a couple of people show up, we may pack up early and leave before noon. Cancellations will be posted on the guild's blog/website/Facebook page.

If you need more info, contact Susan McC., Anya T., or Peggi Y., or use the "contact us" form on the right side of this blog.
