The motel-style rooms have two double beds and a private bath, and are adjacent to the dining room and sewing area. In addition to the relaxing sewing and sharing, our retreats always include a few planned activities for entertainment!  This year we've added a new "bingo-style" quilting game, along with favorites like "Left, Right, Center"; sharing orphan blocks; door prizes; and a freebie table.  A masseuse will be available to provide massages for us - especially nice after a day spent at the sewing machine! It's always such a good time sewing, sharing, laughing, and relaxing together.

Plans are in the works for a potluck supper on Thursday and Friday. There is plenty of space in the fully equipped kitchen area for any snacks and treats we bring along!

The rules are easy. Make a 9”x12” art quilt using the theme, “dreams”. Any style, color, technique, and ability are welcome. All quilts entered in the “Dreaming Of A World Without Cancer” category will be offered for sale at the price of $25.00 each during the month of the exhibit. All profits will be donated to the American Cancer Society of Tioga County at the close of the exhibit.

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

A Message of Appreciation

Sue D. and Rochelle W., from Concern, an agency for foster care in Tioga County, presented a plaque to the guild in appreciation for the donated quilts made by guild members over the years. Dori S. and Lynn G., chairwomen of the guild's Community Outreach Committee, accepted the plaque on behalf of the guild while President, Kate M. , looked on. Sue expressed her gratitude to our guild members for their many years of supporting the Concern organization, and shared stories of how meaningful it is for a child entering foster care to receive a handmade quilt made for them by a caring member of the community. Learn more about the Concern organization through their website, www.concern4kids.org

Tonight's Guild Meeting Program: Andover Fabric Designer Gail Kessler "From Concept to Cloth"

June 15th Guild Meeting Program - Gail Kessler "From Concept to Cloth"

Gail presents a lively and informative talk regarding our favorite passion: Fabric! She discusses the how's and why's of fabric design concept, execution, printing, distribution, quality, and availability. Ever wonder why fabrics don't stay in stock longer, or who determines the trends? How does one become a fabric designer? Should I pre-wash or not? What are those little pin holes along the sides of my fabric? What are "gams"? All these questions and much more will be covered. Bring your questions - Gail will be ready for you! There will be show and tell (and items for sale if you like - let me know)

Gail is a former Marketing Director and current designer for Andover Fabrics, and a former Marketing Director of Benartex Fabrics. She owns Ladyfingers Sewing Studio in Oley PA, which is a BERNINA dealer as well as a 4000 bolt quilt shop. Gail is also a Craftsy instructor with three classes running with nearly 200,000 students enrolled. She has been published in virtually every major quilting magazine and has appeared twice on Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting TV show on PBS, and has lectured and taught quiltmaking nationwide and on several quilt cruises.

Guild Open Sewing in Corning

Can't make it to a guild sewing session during the work week? We have a solution for that!  Guild members and friends have been meeting on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday evenings of each month from 5-8 pm for nearly two years at the Emanuel Lutheran Church at 149 West William Street in Corning. The church does not charge us a rental fee since several guild members are also church members, so in return the group tries to find opportunities to support the church programs.

Here's an update from Carrie Smith, the groups spokesperson:

"HAPPY HOUR SEWING NEWS!

Guess What – we are approaching our 2 year anniversary of this group sewing together after work. Can you believe it! Our first night was on June 19, 2013 and we worked on the MLQG Raffle Quilt.
In appreciation to Emanuel Lutheran Church for their generosity in the use of the Fellowship Hall, we are going to make them a raffle quilt in commemoration of their 100th year anniversary. Last night the group agreed on the design – a very simple 15” star block using bright batiks from our stash and the church is providing the white background fabric and the backing & binding. I will donate the batting and quilt it. The timing is quick, start & complete in June, so the church has July & Aug to sell tickets. Their 100th celebration is in September when they will be drawing the winner. Tickets will sell $3 for one or two for $5. Buy some tickets and you might be the winner of a queen size batik quilt that was made by you & your friends!

If you’d like to participate in making blocks just drop me a note and I’ll email you the instructions.

Here’s the plan:

Select your batiks and get them cut and bring them with you to the June 3rd Happy Hour.
I’ll have the white already cut for you when you get there.

We can work on the blocks together that evening just like we did the very first time we got together or you can pick up your white and work on it at home.

I’ll keep the finished blocks and on June 8th, Phyllis G. and I are making a run to Verna’s to purchase the fabric for the back & binding.

Our goal is to have all the blocks (we need 42) assembled by the June 17th Happy Hour or finish them up that night and maybe even get the top put together.

I’ll take it home and finish it up by the end of the month.

ALSO – on Jun 3rd we’d like to invite everyone to have their dinner with the group during the Happy Hour. Betty had a great idea of having a salad bar – everyone brings something. I hope Betty will bring beets since they go over so well with her other group. I’ll bring the lettuce, paper plates & such. This will be our ANNIVERSARY celebration! Please mark your calendar and plan to join us even if you don’t want to work on the quilt squares. It’s Happy Hour – who doesn't like that?

MLQG Banner Update

Hand quilting of the individual blocks has begun...

More than 40 guild members made blocks for the guild's banner, and the blocks have now all been sewn together around a center panel that was made by one of the guild's founders, Mary Jane Ehlich, who passed away in August 2014. The center panel has been hand-quilted in a cross-hatch pattern by Angie Sykes, and now the rest of the banner needs to be quilted.

The plan is to allow guild members to hand quilt their own blocks, using whatever design they like, simple or complicated. The banner will be set up on a quilting frame at guild meetings and other guild events in the upcoming months, and guild members will be encouraged to quilt their blocks at these times. Thread and needles will be provided; however, guild members may bring their own if they like. If you need to, please bring a thimble of your choice. If you prefer to quilt with a small hoop, or with no hoop or frame at all, the banner can easily be taken off of the frame for that purpose.

We understand that not all guild members may make it to one of these events or may not wish to do hand quilting. Unfinished blocks will be quilted by volunteers, but we hope that most members will participate. Skill is not important here; what is important is participation by the widest number of members. The goal is to have the banner completed by September 2015. A big "Thank You" goes out to all MLQG members who have participated in making the banner, and to those who have volunteered to help finish it.

The banner will be set up for quilting at the open sewing and charity sewing sessions at the Gmeiner in April, as well as at the April guild meeting.

Vote for the MLQG's 2016 Raffle Quilt Pattern

Below you will find three pattern considerations for the MLQG's 2016 raffle quilt.

Keep in mind that these patterns are examples only and not the actual patterns that the committee will be using. Sizes may be changed, borders may be changed or added, applique may also be changed or added as needed.

Please vote for your favorite pattern by checking the appropriate box in the ballot box located in the sidebar to the right.  Comments or suggestions may be made in the comment section below this post or by using the "Contact Us" form in the sidebar to the right.  You may also contact Eleanor F, Susan Mc, or Chris C. with any comments or suggestions. (Find contact information in the guild roster).

Voting will be open until Monday, April 20, 2015.  The winner will be announced at the April guild meeting.

#1 Delectable Mountain Star

This quilt would most likely be changed from a square to a rectangle to better fit a queen size bed.

#2 Ohio Star Variation

This quilt could possibly have some sort of applique added to the border.
It also would make a beautiful Christmas quilt.  Would making this quilt in holiday colors be something we should consider?

#3 Four-Patch with Applique Borders and Pillow Top

A basic four-patch would include all of our members in the making, from beginner to the most experienced!
Borders would most likely be added all the way around as well as more applique.

VOTING IS NOW CLOSED

THE WINNER IS...

#2 Ohio Star Variation

Changes in Daytime Open Sewing and Charity Sewing Sessions

MLQG's daytime open sewing and charity sewing sessions are officially moving to Mondays, starting on Monday, March 23rd, 10:00 - 2:00. The new location is the back room of the Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center (where the monthly guild meetings are held). There will be no more Wednesday sessions at the Masonic Lodge.

All MLQG members of all ability levels and interests are welcome to attend on open sewing Mondays and work on any stitching projects, hand or machine, even knitting/crocheting/embroidery. The fourth Monday of the month will be reserved for charity sewing. Since March 23rd is the fourth Monday, it will be a charity sewing day. Work on whatever outreach project you like.

The purpose of these get-togethers is to spend time with other MLQG fiber fanatics and to learn from each other, no matter what we're all working on. Bring your projects, machine, and lunch. Stay for an hour or stay all day. Just be warned that if only a couple of people show up, we may pack up early and leave before noon. And if the weather is iffy, only you can decide if it is safe for you to drive. Cancellations will be posted on the guild's blog/website/Facebook page.
