A Message of Appreciation

Sue D. and Rochelle W., from Concern, an agency for foster care in Tioga County, presented a plaque to the guild in appreciation for the donated quilts made by guild members over the years. Dori S. and Lynn G., chairwomen of the guild's Community Outreach Committee, accepted the plaque on behalf of the guild while President, Kate M. , looked on. Sue expressed her gratitude to our guild members for their many years of supporting the Concern organization, and shared stories of how meaningful it is for a child entering foster care to receive a handmade quilt made for them by a caring member of the community. Guild Open Sewing - Community Outreach Projects

Come join us for this month's charity sewing and social event, at the Gmeiner Center on Monday, July 27th, from 10:00 - 2:00

We'll be putting together multiple lap quilts using blocks guild members have made over the last few months. We also have tumbler quilts kits to assemble. If you can’t bring your machine there is still plenty of ways to help out, i.e. cutting, sorting, pressing, putting kits together, etc.

Many of the quilts will be donated to foster kids through CONCERN, a nonprofit child welfare agency in our immediate area and throughout the state of Pennsylvania.

We’ll meet at he Gmeiner Center in Wellsboro. There is lots of room, and an iron and ironing board available for use. Bring your sewing machine if you are able, and a bag lunch.

Contact Dori S. or Lynn G., Outreach Chairs, with any questions about our sewing plans. (Find contact information in the roster or comment on this post.)

Outreach 9-Patch Blocks Reminder

Just a quick reminder that the outreach committee is still collecting 12 ½" (unfinished) 9-Patch blocks (4 ½" squares or strips) made with kid friendly novelty prints and coordinating solids or tone on tone prints.  The novelty print can be in either the four or five square positions.   Please bring your finished blocks to the December and January meetings. We will sew the tops together on Charity Quilting days beginning on January 28th. Finished quilts will be donated to CONCERN.

Contact Dori S. or Lynn G., Outreach Chairs, with any questions. (Find contact information is in the roster.)

Over 100!

Shown in the photo are 6 quilts and 7 fleece blankets that were delivered to CONCERN this week.  That brings our total of quilts/blankets donated to foster kids to 110 since we started this project in January of 2013!  This is an ongoing guild project as children, unfortunately, are always going into foster care, so please continue to support the kids with your quilts and blankets. More information about quilts for CONCERN can be found by clicking on the Community Projects tab at the top of this page.

Doing Good Stitches

Phyllis B., a MLQG member and resident of the Shared Home in Wellsboro, recently coordinated a project with some of her fellow residents to make a couple of fun puff quilts for the guild's current outreach project, quilts for CONCERN, the local foster child program. Last week, Phyllis and the other quilters presented the completed quilts to Susan McC., the guild's outreach chairperson. While there, Susan spoke about the project to the Shared Home residents and staff, as well as to a reporter from the local paper. Look for an article in the Wellsboro Gazette soon!

Nice job, ladies, and thank you for your contribution. Keep quilting!

Generous Quilters!

I think I can safely say that Mountain Laurel Quilt Guild members are the most generous quilters!  At Monday night's guild meeting I collected 12 quilts and 13 fleece blankets for CONCERN.  The quilts and blankets were delivered to CONCERN on Wednesday and the social workers there could not have praised the guild more for our efforts.  They have even been able to give each child entering into foster care a quilt or blanket and they have even shared quilts and blankets with some of the other CONCERN locations in the state.  The generosity of our guild is certainly touching the lives of many.  Thank you all for your donation of time, talent and materials and keep up the good work!

Quilts and Blankets for CONCERN

These quilts and blankets were recently delivered to CONCERN and will be handed out to children entering into Tioga County's foster care program.  The social worker who accepted them was so excited to see all of the bright colors and cheerful prints and said that they would certainly help bring a little comfort to children in a sometimes frightening situation.

If you would like to make a quilt for CONCERN you can find the project guidelines at www.mountainlaurelquiltguild.org/communityprojects.html

QUILTS FOR CONCERN

CONCERN is a nonprofit child welfare agency located throughout the state of Pennsylvania.  CONCERN offers foster care, residential services and counseling to children in our immediate area.  Our local Concern office is located in Wellsboro and serves Tioga County.  Every month between 1 and 5 children enter into foster care in our county alone; some come into the program with only the clothes that they are wearing and nothing else.  Wouldn’t it be nice if we could give them a quilt of their own at a time when they feel like they have nothing at all that belongs to them?

Quilts are needed for children from infants to teens, but keep in mind that most of the boys and girls who enter into foster care are school age.

SIZE: Crib or throw. You may decide the exact size, but the maximum dimensions should not exceed twin size.

PATTERN: You may use any pattern of your choice.
FABRICS: 100% cotton (regular or flannel).  Keep in mind that children love brightly colored, kid friendly fabrics and appreciate color-coordinated quilts.
BATTING: 1/8” - 1/4” LOW LOFT batting - can be polyester, cotton or a blend.
ASSEMBLING THE QUILT: All quilts should be machine pieced and quilted (either by machine, hand quilted or tied).
BINDING: Hand or machine binding is acceptable.
DO NOT add embellishments -- buttons, sequins, rhinestones, long strings or loops. These could be a choking hazard.
Contact Susan Mc., Outreach Chairperson, with questions or for more information.
