Wellsboro Home Page Meets MLQG

The Wellsboro Home Page visited with Kate M. and Betty W.-R. at the Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center this week to do a story on our upcoming exhibit.  It's a wonderful report and you also get a sneak peek at what you will see at the opening Friday night!

If you aren't familiar with The Wellsboro Home Page, it is a locally produced web news site that covers news and information about things happening in Wellsboro and around Tioga County, PA. You can visit their site at wellsborohomepage.com

Do You Know Who Made This Colors Of Cancer Quilt?

This Colors of Cancer quilt was given to Susan Mc. at the July meeting without any paperwork.  It does have a label on the back, but the maker's name is not included on the label.  The proper paperwork needs to be filled out ASAP or this sweet little quilt won't be able to be hung and sold at the exhibit! If you made this quilt or know who did, please contact Susan Mc. or leave a comment on this blog post immediately!

Making The News!

A reporter from the Wellsboro Gazette will be at Open Sewing this Wednesday, August 13, to interview guild members and take photos for an article about our upcoming exhibit.  Members who would like to participate are asked to bring their exhibit entries and be prepared to have their photo taken.

Open Sewing is held at the Masonic Lodge on Kelsey Street in Wellsboro from 10:00 until 2:00.  All guild members of all ability levels and interests are welcome to attend and may work on any stitching projects (hand or machine, even knitting, crocheting, or embroidery).  Bring your own sewing supplies (there is an iron and ironing board at the lodge for our use) and a bag lunch.

If you need directions to the lodge or want more information, please contact Anya T., Dori S., or Susan McC. (check your roster for contact information or comment on this blog post).

Colors of Cancer Q & A

Does my quilt have to be all one color?

Your quilt may be all one color if you wish, but it does not have to be monochromatic.  Just be sure to represent the cancer color of your choice in the quilt, binding, or backing.

Does my quilt have to be exactly 9" x 12"?

Your quilts do not have to be exact in size.  Quilts can be slightly larger or smaller in either direction, but because we are asking the same price for each quilt we would like for them all to be about the same size, so please try to make them as close to 9" x 12" as possible.

Can I make more than one quilt?

Absolutely!  The more quilts we have for sale, the more money we can raise for the American Cancer Society!

What do I write for my Artist's Statement?

That's the easy part!  Most importantly tell about why you were motivated to make a Colors for Cancer quilt.  What does your design represent?  What techniques did you use to make your quilt?

I won't be at the August guild meeting.  Can I drop my Colors of Cancer quilt and entry form off with my other entries on the 30th?

No, all Colors of Cancer quilts and entry forms need to be given to Susan Mc. on or before August 18th to ensure enough time to prepare the quilts for hanging and process labels.

What if my quilt doesn't sell during the month of the exhibit?

We are confident that these beautiful works of art are going to fly off the walls! However, if we should end up with a number of unsold quilts they will be offered for sale to guild members by silent auction during the October meeting.  Of course, any money raised through a silent auction will go to the American Cancer Society.

Any other questions about the Colors of Cancer quilts?

Contact Susan Mc. (contact information is in the roster).

Preparing Your Quilt for a MLQG Exhibit

Now that you have your entry for the 2014 Exhibit nearly completed are you confused by how to get it ready for its big debut?  The final steps really aren't that complicated.  All quilts are required to have a hanging sleeve.  Quilts over 30" are required to have a 4" hanging sleeve and quilts less than 30" are required to have a split sleeve.  Each entry must have a label with the name of the quilt and the name of the entrant securely sewn to the back of the quilt, preferably on the bottom left corner.  Finally, inspect your quilt one last time!  Trim any stray threads, remove any chalk or marking lines, and use a lint brush to remove any dust or pet hair.  Now your quilt should be show ready!

Printable instructions for adding a hanging sleeve to your quilt can be found by clicking the "2014 Exhibit" tab at the top of this page.  If you prefer personal instruction, guild members are available to help with hanging sleeves or other entry issues each Wednesday from 10:00-2:00 at the Masonic Lodge in Wellsboro.  Any other questions about the exhibit can be directed to Betty W.-R., Exhibit Chairperson, or Susan Mc., Exhibit Co-Chairperson.

Colors of Cancer

Unfortunately our guild has been hit hard by cancer this past year.  We lost a dear friend to cancer and several more of our quilting sisters are currently battling the disease.  If we add in our own family members who have had or currently have cancer, I think it would probably be safe to say that there isn't a single person in our guild who hasn't been touched by this awful disease.  We often feel helpless when a loved one has cancer, but there is one small thing that we can all do to help fight this disease...make a Colors of Cancer quilt to help raise money for the American Cancer Society of Tioga County!

2014 Exhibit "Colors of Cancer"

The Mountain Laurel Quilt Guild will once again be quilting for a cause during the guild’s 2014 exhibit. Members are invited to help fight cancer by making quilts the color of cancer in memory of a victim, in honor of a survivor, or to simply raise money for the American Cancer Society of Tioga County. The rules are easy. Make a 9”x12” quilt representing any kind of cancer by using a recognizable amount of that particular cancer’s awareness color (e.g. breast cancer = pink, prostate cancer = light blue). Quilts may be, but need not be, monochromatic. Any theme, style, color, technique, and ability are welcome. All quilts entered in the “Colors of Cancer” category will be offered for sale at the price of $25.00 each during the month of the exhibit. All profits will be donated to the American Cancer Society of Tioga County at the close of the exhibit.

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

Complete rules and necessary guidelines can be found on the Colors of Cancer entry form, which can be printed from the guild’s website (see the "exhibit" page) or by clicking here. Entry forms and finished quilts should be given to Susan McC. on or before August 18, 2014.

Quilts must have three layers, be either machine or hand quilted, and have a binding.
Entries must be less than 36" at widest/longest point. This includes embellishments that may be hanging off the edge of the quilt.

Quilts should have a hanging sleeve or another appropriate method for display

Entries must have a label with the name of the maker and title of the quilt sewn securely to the back of the quilt.

Attention New Quilters!

Have you ever looked around at the guild’s quilt exhibit and thought, “I can’t enter any of my quilts because I’m just a beginner.”?

New quilters, there is a new category in the upcoming quilt exhibit and it is just for you! If you started quilting within the last two years and have never entered a quilt in a show, your quilts are eligible to be entered in the Novice Category. Quilts entered in the Novice Category can be any size and style; however, all novice quilts should be pieced, quilted by machine or hand, and finished by the maker.

Let’s show our friends and community that quilting is for everyone! Please consider putting your new found talents and love of quilting on display for others to enjoy at the Mountain Laurel Quilt Guild’s 2014 Exhibit.

Questions? Contact Betty W.-R., Exhibit Chairperson or Susan Mc., Exhibit Co-Chairperson.
