Upcoming Quilt Shows in Lancaster, PA

If you want to get away for a couple of quilt shows only a few hours away from the Twin Tiers, take a look at these --

American Quilter's Society show at the Lancaster County Convention Center March 12-15

The Lancaster Quilt Show at the Continental Inn March 12-15 (note that this used to be called the Spring Quilt Blossom show)

There is no 2014 show at the Lancaster Host Resort (some members may remember the old Quilter's Heritage Celebration show there).

The two 2014 shows mentioned above are not within walking distance of each other, but the show at the Continental Inn is providing a shuttle service.

March Program -- Modern Quilts

MLQG members Susan McC. and Anya T. will discuss today's growing modern quilt movement with a trunk show of some of their recent projects, and they invite all MLQG members to bring their own modern quilts for a special show-and-tell during this program. There is still time during this cold winter to step out of your comfort zone and try something new by making a modern quilt. Need a little added incentive? Everyone who brings a modern quilt (at least a finished top) to the March guild meeting will be entered in a drawing for a special prize that evening.

What exactly is a modern quilt? Modern quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design. Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt. These include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. "Modern traditionalism" or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting.

Attention New Quilters!

Have you ever looked around at the guild’s quilt exhibit and thought, “I can’t enter any of my quilts because I’m just a beginner.”?

New quilters, there is a new category in the upcoming quilt exhibit and it is just for you! If you started quilting within the last two years and have never entered a quilt in a show, your quilts are eligible to be entered in the Novice Category. Quilts entered in the Novice Category can be any size and style; however, all novice quilts should be pieced, quilted by machine or hand, and finished by the maker.

Let’s show our friends and community that quilting is for everyone! Please consider putting your new found talents and love of quilting on display for others to enjoy at the Mountain Laurel Quilt Guild’s 2014 Exhibit.

Questions? Contact Betty W.-R., Exhibit Chairperson or Susan Mc., Exhibit Co-Chairperson.

Open Sewing at the Lake House and Happy Hour Sewing in Corning -- Wednesday, February 19th

Lake House Open Sewing -- MLQG members gather for open sewing sessions at the lake house (near Hills Creek Lake) on Wednesdays from 10:00 until ?. All guild members of all ability levels and interests are welcome to attend on any Wednesday and may work on any stitching projects that they like, hand or machine, even knitting/crocheting/embroidery. The only exception is the fourth Wednesday of the month, which will continue to be a charity sewing day.

The purpose of these get-togethers is to spend time with other fiber fanatics and to learn from each other, no matter what we're all working on. Bring your projects, machine, and lunch. Stay for an hour or stay all day. Just be warned that if only a couple of people show up in the morning, we may close up shop by noon (but that doesn't happen too often).

The next open sewing session at the lake house will be on Wednesday, February 19th. If you need directions to the lake house or want more info, please contact Anya T., Dori S., or Susan McC. (check your roster for contact info or comment on this blog post).

And if you can't come during the day to the lake house, consider going to Happy Hour Sewing in Corning --

We like food  if you want to bring some or we can order out. Time is from 5:00PM until 8:00PM at the Emanuel Lutheran Church, West William St. Corning, NY. Contact Carrie S. (check your roster for contact info) for more details. The next date for Happy Hour Sewing is Wednesday, February 19th.

If you plan on attending Happy Hour Sewing, please let Carrie S. or Marcia A. know -- they don't want to open up the church if no one plans to come...(contact info is on your guild roster).

If the weather is iffy, please don't put yourself in danger on the roads! Check back on the blog for any cancellation notices.
