Outreach Update

Changes to Charity Sew

Charity Sew will be held Wednesday, September 27th beginning at 10:30 at Scheetz Sew Creative in Wellsboro, PA.  Due to changes to the workspace we will be spending this time cutting fabrics and preparing kits for outreach projects to be sewn at home.  Please bring your favorite rotary cutter and ruler if you would like to help.

Veteran Quilts

There is an immediate need for small (40ish x 50ish) patriotic quillts for local veterans entering into hospice care. The free pattern, Quick Strippie, at https://maryquilts.com/quick-strippie/ works very well for this project. All you need is a yard each of red, white, and blue fabric and and couple of hours to complete a top.  To date, over 15 quilts have been distributed to local veterans this year.

Days For Girls

The generosity of quilters has come through again!  Thanks to MLQG members and non-members, along with several local quilt shops, quilters in our area donated fabric and cut supplies that are now on their way to Uganda for Days For Girls.  Instructors will use these supplies to teach women in Uganda how to make sanitary kits.  Thanks to everyone who worked to make this shipment possible!
The Days For Girls need for September is 9" x 9" PREWASHED 100% flannel squares. They are asking that all flannel be prewashed due to shrinkage issues.  Please prewash your fabrics, if you are able.  Squares should be dropped off at Scheetz Sew Creative in Wellsboro, PA by Saturday, September 30th.
For more information about Days For Girls visit https://www.daysforgirls.org/

An Outreach Project For Everyone

Just a reminder that all of the guild's outreach projects continue through the year.  Please follow your heart and support one or all of the great charities to which the guild donates items...Bumble Bags and port pillows for the Humble Bumble Project, placemats for Meals on Wheels, pillow cases for Hershey Children's Hospital or Goodies for our Troops, fabrics for Days For Girls, and quilts for veterans, elders, and children.  Find the details for all of these projects on the guild's blog, https://mountainlaurelquiltguild.blogspot.com under the Outreach Projects tab.

A Quilt Show in an Hour – A Bed Turning by the Mountain Laurel Quilt Guild

A Quilt Show in an Hour
A Bed Turning by the Mountain Laurel Quilt Guild

The guild will be celebrating its 25th anniversary this month, and as part of that celebration we are planning a bed turning to take place at the Gmeiner on Friday, September 29th (7:00 PM) and Saturday, September 30 (1:00 PM).

At the bed turning, the guild will highlight quilts made by some of its charter members and presidents, as well as some past raffle quilts made by many members of the guild over the years. The audience will hear the stories behind the quilts and what inspired the quiltmakers to make them. There will be quilts of all styles, colors, and fabrics, traditional and modern.

This should be a fun and inspirational event for quilters and non-quilters alike, so be sure to mark your calendars and tell your friends. Light refreshments will be served.

Remember -- Friday, September 29th at 7:00 PM and Saturday, September 30th at 1:00 PM (admission is free)

Days For Girls

 Days For Girls

What if you had to miss school or work because you did not have proper menstrual supplies? How many days per year would you lose in education and wages simply because you got your period? What if no one ever taught you about menstruation, or worse: if menstrual taboos and myths made you feel ashamed of your body? This is the situation for more than 500 million women, girls and menstruators worldwide.

Can you cut some scraps for Days For Girls?

What is needed?

8 1/2 × 8 1/2 100% cotton flannel squares

8 1/2 × 10 1/2 100% cotton rectangles

6 × 6 100% cotton squares

These fabrics should all be 100% cotton. Darker colors and prints are preferred.

Also needed...

8 1/2 × 10 1/2 PUL rectangles

Polyurethane Laminate or PUL is a waterproof and breathable fabric available locally at Scheetz Sew Creative.  Darker colors are preferred.

Squares/rectangles may be dropped off at Scheetz Sew Creative in Wellsboro.

July 2023 Meeting Notes and Photos

What a treat is was for us to have Linda Stager come and share tips on how composition in quilting is similar to that in photography. She showed us many ways to make our designs pleasing to the human eye. We had a lot of fun with the manipulatives she gave us for working with figure/ground, rule of thirds, golden ratio, and more. The video she showed at the beginning of her talk was very helpful. You can view it here: Composition in Photography with Ted Forbes We watched only the first 5 minutes or so.

Of course, we had a lot of fun with Show and Tell as well.

Linda Stager began her discussion by showing us the only quilt she has ever worked on.

Linda is a dynamic speaker and kept us engaged.

Linda took some photos at the meeting, pictured is Nikki opening the meeting with the assembled members.

Joyce's latest charity quilt made from scraps. It is lovely.

A wonderful example of machine embroidered applique.

Marge's completed Round Robin quilt. The hand-quilting is beautiful.

Nikki brought in a quilt that was hand-embroidered and hand-quilted by her grandmother, Beatrice Sutliff Ridall from Canton, PA

Members wanted a closer look at the stitching.

Don't forget, next month's meeting will be held on the 2nd Monday of the month, August 14th at 6pm at the Lakeside Pavilion at Ives Run Recreation area. We always have a great time. Please bring your significant other or a prospective member, a dish to share, and your own table service.
