Modern Quilt Group

At April 8th's organizational meeting, it was decided that there is definitely enough interest in modern quilting within the MLQG to proceed with forming a modern quilt group for our guild members.  (Note that this is a modern quilt group that is part of the MLQG, not a modern quilt guild.)

Meetings will be held on the second Monday of each month at The Lake House at 10:00 am.  The morning will consist of a short demonstration or activity pertaining to modern quilting, discussion, and show and tell.  If you wish, you may bring a brown bag lunch and then spend the afternoon sewing on your latest modern quilt project.

Our first meeting will be on Monday, May 13th at 10:00 and all guild members who are interested in modern quilts are invited to attend. The activity for this month's meeting will be an exploration in color.  The instructions are as follows...

Color Exploration Activity
Designed by Weeks Ringle and modified for our group by Nancy C.

Palette #1
Put together a palette of fabrics with colors you use frequently. Cut up 25, 2 1/2" squares with fabrics of colors you use frequently and sew them into a 5 x 5 grid. Arrange them in any way you like to make them look pleasing. Set the grid aside and bring it to the May 13th meeting.

Palette #2
Bring a bag of scraps to share to the May 13th meeting.  At the meeting, put together another palette of colors, this time the colors of fabrics that you rarely use.  What do the "bad" colors need to make them look good? Explore combinations until you find something you like. If you need to, you may include up to 5 of the same colors used in Palette #1 to make it look good. Now cut up another set of these 25, 2 1/2" squares. Arrange them into a 5 x 5 grid and sew them together. Do you like the results? What does it take to make the colors you don't like look good? What made it work?

Do you attend most guild meetings?
Do you take digital photos?
Do you have access to a scanner?
Do you want to help the guild but don’t have much free time?
If you answered, “Yes,” to these questions, contact Susan McC, Nancy C, or Holly M and let us know that you are willing to be the next MLQG Historian for the 2013-14 year.

Duties of the Historian
• Capture the essence of guild experiences and maintain the related
material in an archive. Some of the archive can be a physical scrap book,
but most should be electronic.
• Collect newspaper articles about the guild and scan them for inclusion in
the archive. Coordinate with the publicity chair person to become aware of
potential clips.
• Collect digital pictures of guild activities and the related people.
− Take digital photos at guild events.
− Gather photos from others that may be useful for historical purposes.
− Make digital photos available to others as requested (e.g., newsletter,
• Make sure that past archival material is being maintained.
Ideally the historian should be competent in technologies associated with
archiving material (digital photography, scanning images, burning CDs, uploading
photos, etc.)

Interested? Contact Susan McC, Nancy C, Holly M, or simply leave a comment on this post and someone will get in touch with you.

Generous Quilters!

I think I can safely say that Mountain Laurel Quilt Guild members are the most generous quilters!  At Monday night's guild meeting I collected 12 quilts and 13 fleece blankets for CONCERN.  The quilts and blankets were delivered to CONCERN on Wednesday and the social workers there could not have praised the guild more for our efforts.  They have even been able to give each child entering into foster care a quilt or blanket and they have even shared quilts and blankets with some of the other CONCERN locations in the state.  The generosity of our guild is certainly touching the lives of many.  Thank you all for your donation of time, talent and materials and keep up the good work!

MLQG Member Wins at AQS Lancaster

Congratulations to guild member Kathy Winsor for her ribbon-winning quilt at AQS Lancaster this year! Her quilt was also on display at our guild's exhibit last September, so many of us got to see it in person before it was famous!

Way to go, Kathy!
