Special Meeting Alert from our president

Hello everyone,

As you all know there has been a lot of conversation about the future of the guild lately. This has been weighing heavily on my heart the past several months. I have decided to schedule a SPECIAL TOWN HALL meeting to discuss the future of the Guild. The meeting will be held on SEPTEMBER 11, at 10:00 AM at the Tokishi building at 124 Nypum Dr, Wellsboro.

I hope to see most of the membership there. This will be an open micforum so please be prepared to present your thoughts and feelings. If you are unable to attend, please email or call me with any information that you would like to share. Due to COVID the policy is that if you are vaccinated, masks are optional.

Always quilting in my mind,

Sylvia

August 2021, Yearly Picnic and Monthly Guild Meeting

Wow! What a great time we had at the picnic. Mary did an excellent job as our hostess and had the picnic shelter looking very welcoming when we arrived. She treated us to wonderful bouquets from her garden.

Bouquet of hydrangeas

Our members cook as well as they sew. We had a wonderful meal with many tasty treats.

Of course, we took time to enjoy a good visit with friends old and new. It was so nice to be out in the fresh air with wonderful scenery surrounding us.

Once we were all full, it was time to get down to business. Sylvia began the meeting.

Fellow members, we have a serious lack of people willing to take an active role in the guild and fill an executive position. Many of you have received an email from Sylvia asking for ideas about how the Guild should proceed. If you have any interest in filling one of the following positions, please contact Sylvia right away.
  • President
  • Vice President
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Outreach
  • Historian
  • National Speaker
  • Workshops
  • Publicity
Vonda is still taking reservation deposits for the Fall Retreat at Three Springs Inn. The deadline for sending her a check is September 1st.

The 2022 quilt show is in a bit of limbo. It will depend on the form the Guild takes as we move forward.  Again, those currently in executive positions would love to have the Guild continue as it has, but the Bylaws state positions may only be filled by the same person for 2 years in a row. If you are not willing to take a position, but have suggestions on how the Guild can remain active in any form, please contact Sylvia.

Our Tips, Tricks, and Techniques session had some wonderful tips.
  1. Bleeding dyes at final wash - Imagine washing a finished Quilt of Valor in preparation for presenting it and having dye bleed into the white parts 3 days before you fly out to gift it. What a nightmare. This happened to Sylvia. She went online to find out what to try and saw directions to put the quilt in the hottest water she could draw with blue, Dawn dish soap and soak it overnight. She then drained off the water and rinsed the quilt in cold water a few times. It worked!! The quilt was saved and she was able to make the presentation. How cool is that?
  2. Using cone thread on normal spool pins- If you want to use cone thread on a regular spool pin, just cut off a piece of dowel and drill a hole in the center of the disc you create. Then you can insert the disc in the bottom of the cone and place the cone on the pin of your machine. Happy sewing!
  3. The hazards of Frixion pens- as many of you know, sometimes the ink from a Frixion pen sometimes reappears as a ghost image after you iron it to remove it. If you spray your fabric with Best Press or Starch Savvy before writing AND switch to a Frixion maker instead of the pen, the ink will disappear.
  4. Folding quilts for storage- When folding a quilt for storage, they wrinkle less and have fewer creases if you fold along the bias.
  5. Better application of starch substitutes- If you put your Best Press or Starch Savvy into a spray bottle with a mister feature, it covers your fabric better and you use less product to do the work.

Show and Tell!!!

Our members provided a lot of projects to view and were successful at the Tioga County Fair. It was great to see what they did and to see the projects of others who did not compete at the fair.

I hope we see you at our next meeting on Monday, September, 20th, 7:00 PM, Masonic Lodge located at 9 Meadow Street in Tioga, Pennsylvania 16930.

Plans for the day are to work with Carla Klop shortcut sheets. You may choose to do one or all four work on your own or with a buddy. We will work on flying geese, ½ square triangle, ¼ square triangle, and hunter star block. At the end of the day, we will gather to share our discoveries. Go to https://www.kitsbycarla.com/shortcut-sheets1.html for more information and tutorials.

  •  Bring your machine, rulers, mats, pressing stick (if you have one), etc.
  • Rough material size needed.
  • ½ square- 2 fat quarters contrasting colors

June 2021 Monthly Guild Meeting

We had a great meeting in June. It was so nice to be together and share our love of quilting with others who feel the same way.

President Sylvia kicked off the meeting with her usual humor and candor. She is concerned about the number of open positions for next year. Please consider serving your guild by volunteering your time. We currently have 106 members on our roll. Although we are not a large organization, without participation, we will be unable to do all of the fun things that we do.

Jan gave our treasurer's report. All is well.

During our Tips, Tricks, and Techniques session,  we only had 3 items:

  • Sylvia shared that you can use a crocheted scrubbie to clean your cutting mat. She suggested just rubbing the scrubbie on the dry mat. It picks up a LOT of fuzz and loose thread.
  • Ellen shared that she had learned the hard way to NOT iron over disappearing in or chalk.
  • Jackie (a guest) shared that you can mark dark fabrics with the edge of a sliver of soap.

 Exhibit 2022

We next discussed our  exhibit which will take place next year. The label has been put on the raffle quilt and Cathy took it to be photographed. Sylvia reported that the shots turned out wonderfully. The post cards, raffle tickets, and other materials to promote the event have been ordered. As in the past, raffle tickets will sell for $1 each or $5 for 6 tickets. Stay tuned to know when you can have tickets to sell.

One Day Workshop

Jan and Nancy will be hosting a 1-day workshop at Jan's house on July 17th from 9 am to 4pm. Please bring your own lunch. Snacks and drinks will be provided. We will be treated to a "Discovery Retreat" using short cut sheets from Carla Klop. You are encouraged to bring some scrap fabrics so you can try out the techniques and share your opinion on them. After we eat lunch we will take a break from sewing to play a round of LRC. Please bring 10, 5-inch squares for this game. 5 of your squares should be light-colored and 5 should be dark-colored. Oh, what fun this will be!

We are aware that the online form links from these blog pages are not working correctly and hope to correct that soon.

Jackie, Ellen's sister and our guest at the meeting was first up for Show & Tell, she showed us a cute quilt in an hour glass variation. I was particularly taken with the backing. PENGUINS!

Cathy wowed us with her modern quilt. The muted tones just made it wonderful.

Once again, Cathy's neighbor used her quilted art as an inspiration for his own art project.

The applique on Deb's 12 Days of Quilting quilt was amazing.

Amazing use of color on this batik fabric quilt!

One block wonder with a variation on the layout.

Maureen shared her very cute Dr. Seuss quilt with us.

Brenda made this pillow from fabric left over from a quilt.

Orphan Block Program

Finally, it was time to play with the orphan blocks that we brought for the meeting.  The guidelines were simple, we divided into 4 teams, each team selected some orphan blocks to use to design a charity quilt. Plain/blender fabrics were provided to serve as background for the proposed quilts. At the end of our creative time, we shared our ideas with the group and one person from each team took the blocks home to assemble into a quilt top. There were a lot of wonderful ideas, some quilty fellowship, and just plain ol' fun shared among the members present. I can't wait to see the completed projects.
