Mid-Winter Workshop Signups
Mid-Winter Workshop: January 25
at Wellsboro Presbyterian Church Social Room: 9-3
$5.00
There is still room to sign up with Grace (Schauer@hughes.net) for a fun day learning a new pieced block, practicing free motion machine quilting designs, exchanging winter blocks and good food. (dish to pass)
There were many who showed interest that we have not heard from. The weather can’t be any worse than what we have experienced so far. My car has survived the deep snow, cinders and slush and glaring ice. I will be sending out more details to those who have signed up soon. Sign up at the next meeting, January 20.
Thanks,
Grace S.
Open Sewing at the Lake House -- Wednesday, January 15th
Lake House Open Sewing -- MLQG members gather for open sewing sessions at the lake house (near Hills Creek Lake) on Wednesdays from 10:00 until ?. All guild members of all ability levels and interests are welcome to attend on any Wednesday and may work on any stitching projects that they like, hand or machine, even knitting/crocheting/ embroidery. The only exception is the fourth Wednesday of the month, which will continue to be a charity sewing day.
The purpose of these get-togethers is to spend time with other fiber fanatics and to learn from each other, no matter what we're all working on. Bring your projects, machine, and lunch. Stay for an hour or stay all day. Just be warned that if only a couple of people show up in the morning, we may close up shop by noon (but that doesn't happen too often). And of course, if the weather is iffy, please don't put yourself in danger on the roads.
The next open sewing session at the lake house will be on Wednesday, January 15th. If you need directions to the lake house or want more info, please contact Anya T., Dori S., or Susan McC. (check your roster for contact info or comment on this blog post).
If weather causes cancellation of open sewing, please check back here on the blog for updates.

Resolve To Make a Modern Quilt in 2014
Happy New Year, MLQG Members!
Need a fun project to keep your mind off the cold weather? Why not resolve to make a modern quilt in 2014? This winter all guild members are challenged to step out of their comfort zone and try something new by making a modern quilt for a special modern quilt show-and-tell as part of the March 2014 meeting. Need a little added incentive? Everyone who brings a modern quilt to the March meeting will be entered in a drawing for a special prize.
What exactly is a modern quilt? Modern quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design. Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt. These include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. "Modern traditionalism" or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting.
Would you like to see some beautiful examples of modern quilts? Visit the Modern Quilting Gallery at www.themodernquiltguild.com/portfolio
So what are you waiting for? Get excited, get creative and get sewing. Challenge yourself and go make something great! Contact Anya T. or Susan Mc. with any questions or for more information.
