Can't make it to a guild sewing session during the work week? We have a
solution for that! Guild members and friends have been meeting on the 1st and
3rd Wednesday evenings of each month from 5-8 pm for nearly two years at the
Emanuel Lutheran Church at 149 West William Street in Corning. The church does
not charge us a rental fee since several guild members are also church members,
so in return the group tries to find opportunities to support the church
programs.
Here's an update from Carrie Smith, the groups spokesperson:
"HAPPY HOUR SEWING NEWS!
Guess What – we are approaching our 2 year anniversary of this group sewing
together after work. Can you believe it! Our first night was on June 19, 2013
and we worked on the MLQG Raffle Quilt.
In appreciation to Emanuel Lutheran Church for their generosity in the use
of the Fellowship Hall, we are going to make them a raffle quilt in
commemoration of their 100th year anniversary. Last night the group agreed on
the design – a very simple 15” star block using bright batiks from our stash and
the church is providing the white background fabric and the backing &
binding. I will donate the batting and quilt it. The timing is quick, start
& complete in June, so the church has July & Aug to sell tickets. Their
100th celebration is in September when they will be drawing the winner. Tickets
will sell $3 for one or two for $5. Buy some tickets and you might be the winner
of a queen size batik quilt that was made by you & your friends!
If you’d like to participate in making blocks just drop me a note and I’ll
email you the instructions.
Here’s the plan:
Select your batiks and get them cut and bring them with you to the June 3rd
Happy Hour.
I’ll have the white already cut for you when you get there.
We can work on the blocks together that evening just like we did the very
first time we got together or you can pick up your white and work on it at
home.
I’ll keep the finished blocks and on June 8th, Phyllis G. and I are making
a run to Verna’s to purchase the fabric for the back & binding.
Our goal is to have all the blocks (we need 42) assembled by the June 17th
Happy Hour or finish them up that night and maybe even get the top put
together.
I’ll take it home and finish it up by the end of the month.
ALSO – on Jun 3rd we’d like to invite everyone to have their dinner with
the group during the Happy Hour. Betty had a great idea of having a salad bar –
everyone brings something. I hope Betty will bring beets since they go over so
well with her other group. I’ll bring the lettuce, paper plates & such. This
will be our ANNIVERSARY celebration! Please mark your calendar and plan to join
us even if you don’t want to work on the quilt squares. It’s Happy Hour – who
doesn't like that?
