2016 Art Quilts for ACS

"Dreaming Of A World Without Cancer"

The Mountain Laurel Quilt Guild will once again be quilting for a cause during the guild’s 2016 exhibit. Members are invited to help fight cancer by making an art quilt in memory of a victim, in honor of a survivor, or to simply raise money for the American Cancer Society of Tioga County. The rules are easy. Make a 9”x12” art quilt using the theme, “dreams”. Any style, color, technique, and ability are welcome. All quilts entered in the “Dreaming Of A World Without Cancer” category will be offered for sale at the price of $25.00 each during the month of the exhibit. All profits will be donated to the American Cancer Society of Tioga County at the close of the exhibit.

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

A Message of Appreciation

Sue D. and Rochelle W., from Concern, an agency for foster care in Tioga County, presented a plaque to the guild in appreciation for the donated quilts made by guild members over the years. Dori S. and Lynn G., chairwomen of the guild's Community Outreach Committee, accepted the plaque on behalf of the guild while President, Kate M. , looked on. Sue expressed her gratitude to our guild members for their many years of supporting the Concern organization, and shared stories of how meaningful it is for a child entering foster care to receive a handmade quilt made for them by a caring member of the community. Learn more about the Concern organization through their website, www.concern4kids.org

Guild Open Sewing - Community Outreach Projects

Come join us for this month's charity sewing and social event, at the Gmeiner Center on Monday, July 27th, from 10:00 - 2:00

We'll be putting together multiple lap quilts using blocks guild members have made over the last few months. We also have tumbler quilts kits to assemble. If you can’t bring your machine there is still plenty of ways to help out, i.e. cutting, sorting, pressing, putting kits together, etc.

Many of the quilts will be donated to foster kids through CONCERN, a nonprofit child welfare agency in our immediate area and throughout the state of Pennsylvania.

We’ll meet at he Gmeiner Center in Wellsboro. There is lots of room, and an iron and ironing board available for use. Bring your sewing machine if you are able, and a bag lunch.

Contact Dori S. or Lynn G., Outreach Chairs, with any questions about our sewing plans. (Find contact information in the roster or comment on this post.)
