MLQG Membership Renewal Reminder

Since harsh weather conditions forced the cancellation of this month's MLQG meeting, some members did not have a chance to pay dues directly to the membership chair at the meeting as hoped.

You can still send your payment to membership chair Dawn P. by snail mail. Dawn's contact info can be found on the guild roster and in every newsletter issue. If you enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope, Dawn will send you your membership card. If you do not have a roster or newsletter, you can comment on this blog post or use the "contact us" form on the right-side column of this blog, and someone will get in touch with you by private message.

Remember, if you want to keep your MLQG membership privileges for 2019, the annual dues ($20) are due by February 1, 2019. The check should be made out to MLQG.

Thanks!

MLQG Online Presence

At the January 11, 2019 meeting, the MLQG board decided to eliminate the guild's website, since there are other places online where the guild's info is available to members and the general public at no cost to the guild.

-- MLQG blog -- the guild's blog can be found at mountainlaurelquiltguild.blogspot.com. You can sign up to receive an email every time there is a new post on the blog by typing in your email address in the box located in the right-side column. (Obviously, if you're reading this here, you are on the blog).

-- MLQG Facebook page -- on Facebook, the guild's page can be found by searching for "Mountain Laurel Quilt Guild". "Like" the page, and you will receive posts in your Facebook newsfeed. You can also reach the guild's Facebook page by clicking on the link located a bit farther down on the right-side column of this blog.

Cancellations, news, and updates on guild events will be published on both the blog and on Facebook.

MLQG also maintains an informal, private group on Facebook called "MLQG -- The Virtual Quilting Bee" where guild members are encouraged to post photos of their projects, questions about quilting, news about upcoming quilt shows, etc. All MLQG members are welcome to join this group.

Questions? Contact Anya T. or Susan McC. You can find their contact info on your copy of the guild's roster or any newsletter. Or you can comment on this post or use the "contact us" form located on the right-side column of the blog.

Getting to Know You Trivia Game About the Guild and Its Members

CONTRIBUTIONS WANTED: Do you know something about a sister guild member that everyone else might not know? If so, we need your contribution. It doesn’t have to be earth-shattering, just something that is unique that you might know about a guild member that would not be known to everyone. We will be incorporating submissions into January’s Trivia game.

For example: Question:  Which guild member has a dog named Rooster.  Answer: Sylvia L.

Come and join the fun, because you don’t know what we might know about YOU!!

Please forward your submissions to MLQG president, Sylvia L. (Check your roster or newsletter for her contact info).

We will be having tea and cookies during this month's meeting, so please bring some cookies! We have some wonderful bakers in the guild!

Open Sewing at the Gmeiner -- Monday, January 7th

Next Open Sewing Session
 Monday, January 7th at the Gmeiner 10:00 - 2:00

All MLQG members of all ability levels and interests are welcome to attend the open sewing sessions at the Gmeiner Art and Cultural Center (where the monthly guild meetings are held) on the first Monday of each month, 10:00 - 2:00, to work on any stitching projects, hand or machine, even knitting, crocheting, or embroidery.

The purpose of these get-togethers is to spend time with other MLQG fiber fanatics and to learn from each other, no matter what we're all working on. Bring your projects, machine, and lunch. Stay for an hour or stay all day. Just be warned that if only a couple of people show up, we may pack up early and leave before noon. Cancellations will be posted on the guild's blog/website/Facebook page.

If you need more info, contact Susan McC., Anya T., or Peggi Y., or use the "contact us" form on the right side of this blog.

Message From MLQG 2019 President

Welcome to the New Year!

2019 is going to be an exciting time for our Guild. I would like to personally thank Betty M. for her support and patience during her Presidency. Many of you know that I can be a little overzealous! I am truly honored to be your President for the next couple of years. I seem to have gotten myself more and more attached to each of you over the years, so I knew that should I be asked, I would accept the nomination. I learned a lot during my tenure as Vice President (2007-08 and 2017-18) and will be bringing those things into my Presidency. I will work hard to support the mission statement of the Guild and to listen to the membership for ways to do so.

By the way did you know that “the purpose of this guild shall be to further the art of quilting through education, to provide a means of sharing ideas, materials, skills, and fellowship, and to encourage self-expression through the art of quilting.” That will be my focus during my tenure, feel free to let me know if I am not living up to my promise. As I like to remind everyone, this is not my guild, it’s our guild. I know that there was some pressure to fill all the chairs this year, but we were unsuccessful. Perhaps that is a signal to us that we should look at what we have been doing.

Our executive board has been considering some radical and new ideas in support of our mission statement. We do some things well and we will continue to do these things as we have in the past. There are, however, some things that we are asking ourselves, “How can we grow and what needs to change?” This is your opportunity to add to the conversation. You are invited to the board meetings so watch your newsletter to see when they are scheduled and bring your thoughts and ideas. I will be bringing a suggestion box to each meeting (hopefully I will remember it each month!), so you can make your contribution that way if you prefer.

I joined the New York State Quilt Consortium last year and had a great time when I went to their annual meeting at Watson Homestead in September. The Consortium is made up of guilds and individuals from all over New York and Pennsylvania. This year I signed us up as a guild, so everyone can participate in their activities. They have a lot of fun and interesting things to do, as well as some scholarship monies that we can apply for. I am planning on attending their next meeting which will be on March 20,2019 with the Endless Mountains Quilt Guild hosting at the Presbyterian Church, Waverly, NY. I would like a group of us to get together and attend. Save the date if you are interested. Check out their info at www.qcnys.org.

There will be lots more to come as we talk and share throughout the new year. My challenge to each of you is to contribute where you can. Those small things that you do that often go unrecognized contribute to the collective personality of our Guild and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Always quilting in my mind,  Sylvia L.
